Hey, just following up to say: Thanks for the feedback! There's been a lot of really constructive criticism and clearly expressed frustration with the map. While we were happy with it enough to release it, and find our own fun in it, the intent was not to make a map enjoyable only to the authors.
This was pretty rushed out for Halloween- not an excuse, but context for some faults. I think getting a larger head start before a planned deadline is just one of many lessons to take from this. We're hoping that next year we can iterate on this idea with improvements based on the feedback we got here.
Just to be clear, I think some of the most obvious faults we identified from feedback and playing in public servers was:
-Needs clearer direction/idea of how to progress
-Ammo was too scarce for the bullet-sponge monsters
-Too easy to get lost/lose the monster in a very large and dark map, creating lulls in gameplay
-Needed more variety in gameplay
I think the biggest point is that we should facilitate the players getting involved in gameplay. In public servers, somebody is likely to come on, not know what to do, and votemap away thinking the map is broken.
This map is very underwhelming but I think it could be made better by making it more clear what the objective is and by filling the map with zombies or some other type of enemy and having the monsters from this map act more as boss fights. There aren't enough weapons on the map and its way too dark. The map is very large but I think that filling it up with other enemies and having a few more events happening on the map before the boss fights would help.
Perhaps when you find the boss a lot of weaker enemies spawn around it.
I left a review (my first ever) kind of explaining in a bit more detail about what I think, but overall it was okay-ish for me, but also can understand why some might not think that way.
Never really played the original mod (only watched gameplay), so I can't really make a fair comparison between the two, so bear that in mind.
I liked the starting fade in with the silly campfire and the surrounding fog, also some of the locations, like the church, but the trees and literally walls of trees kind of ruined a bit of the immersion for me, if only a little bit.
Map is also way too big and empty. So little ammo to go around, especially when playing with people.
The enemies were not that interesting, in fact, one of them was a major pain when trying this map solo.
The co-creator said it was kind of rushed (when playing with us) in order to get it out before halloween, althought I wish they could have taken a bit more time to polish it more.
I hope to do something similar next year, so make sure to leave plenty of feedback for what did and didn't work for you!
