Map review of Afrika Korps Bonus

Afrika Korps Bonus is exactly what it says on the tin: a bonus map for those who liked Afrika Korps. It feels a lot like Afrika Korps' second map, in that it's just a straight level of the mapset's iconic objectives rehashed in another formation. It sort of reminds me of those Zelda Rom Randomizers that people get that mix up the Zelda dungeons. This is like a mixed up version of Map 2 from Afrika Korps.
For those who don't know Afrika Korps as a mapset, it's a WW2 themed objective-walkthrough mapset prioritizing stealing documents and destroying German tanks, radios, and weapons. The players are given a handgun, a knife, and an MP5 (reskinned to be a tommygun), and later pick up a revolver, hand grenades, a sniper rifle, and sometimes even a bazooka. The bazooka, unfortunately, does not respawn after being picked up. I don't like that mechanic but it's some kind of choice on the part of the mapper.
While everything good I'd have to say about Afrika Korps applies here, there are a couple negatives I'd have to add now as well. For one thing, there's a massive invisible box around the MG42 guns now which enemies frequently take cover behind, making them unshootable until they briefly pop out. There's a sniper at the beginning of the map who is an especially egregious example of this.
This map differs a bit from the previous ones by having two consecutive tank battles and an interesting set piece where players must advance on a tank in a relatively open area. Other than that, it's more of the same stuff you'd expect from Afrika Korps. If you have this installed then when you beat Afrika Korps this map will start automatically. This feels like a far less thrilling cap to the Afrika Korps series than the third map of the original set, with this feeling more like it could fit between maps 2 and 3 of the original set, but given how much of a treat the first set was I won't be the guy who complains about more of a good thing.
If you liked Afrika Korps, give Afrika Korps Bonus a look. If you're already running a server rotation with Afrika Korps in it, throw Afrika Korps Bonus in as well. It's just more.
Pros:
- It's Afrika Korps, but again!
- Shooting nazis
- Ramped up challenge in some areas compared to the original mapset
Cons:
- No checkpoints this time around
- MG42s make enemies invincible
- Not a very interesting follow-up to Afrika Korps, not really adding anything to the formula
