Map review of Beat this

Beat This! is Sudoku played using the silly block physics in Sven Co-op. I thought this was going to be an incredible randomized sudoku game, but my teammate confirmed it was the same puzzle the on retrying. Approach a console and spawn a block with a number from a UI. Place the block where it is missing in the sudoku puzzle. Stand on a glass platform overlooking the puzzle to get a better view of the whole thing, and use the laser of a deagle to point to others solving the puzzle. Shoot straight through the glass barrier to mark spots to remember where you wish to place blocks.
I've gotta say, when it comes to putting sudoku in Sven Co-op it's hard to ask for better than this. If it randomized it'd blow my mind, but I can't blame it for not including such a sophisticated feature. What's there is shockingly playable and I feel Puchi did just about everything to ensure this was playable. Every feature is a good idea and in the end I had fun solving this with a teammate- it took roughly 30 minutes mostly due to the time it takes to spawn a new block and slide it into position. It was an easy sudoku puzzle, but it was enjoyable.
The map itself has a pretty standard Black Mesa test room feel about it, but to its credit it's very well textured and mapped. The UI for spawning the new blocks works great, the teleporter which spawns new blocks is very good looking, things worked consistently and didn't break for us, and there's even some nice Neverhood music in the elevators where you spawn.
If you want to play Sudoku in Sven Co-op, I don't think you're gonna get much better than this. I recommend throwing this into any server list where a sudoku puzzle wouldn't feel out of place.
Pros:
- It's sudoku that's actually fun to play in first person
- Map looks nice to boot
- It's clear that a lot of thought went into design, especially in the design of the raised platform
Cons:
- Once you solve the puzzle, there's not much replay value
- It's a very easy puzzle
- It takes a lot longer than normal sudoku just because the format adds busywork
