Map Review of defend-base-3

The level design is not horrible to look at, but is very basic and suffer from many imperfections. Glasses are left fullbright, VHLT has a fix for that. Rocks are little short of flat walls textured with a rock texture. Some rooms don’t have light switches, others have enormous ones. Elevators are made of concrete and zigzag for no reason. Some crates and glasses are not breakable even though their textures tell the opposite.

Gameplay is mostly great at the beginning of the map and at the end, but apart from a few occasions it mostly amounts to shooting enemies waiting for the player in a room. It’s nice to have friendly NPCs and they’re well used throughout the map. The final combat scene lasts a little bit too long in my opinion.

Story telling is done in a very simple way: some text, some fading, and poof! The player are teleported to the next area.

The map overall plays well enough, but I feel like there were a lot of good ideas that weren’t used to their full potential.

Pros:

  • Interaction with friendly NPCs and fights between NPCs
  • Gameplay is generally okay and in some instances very good

Cons:

  • Mapping is very basic and botched
Score: 7 / 10
