Map Review of bunker-fight

This is one of those maps where outside the first door is a swarm of enemies. It is a fairly straightforward walkthrough map with lots of enemies with a lot of health. There are some HEV chargers with lots of charge but later in the map there are snipers that kill us in one hit no matter how much armor we have.

We start off by falling through the level in what I think is a pretty cool effect, at least until I started taking fall damage. The spawn area has two health and HEV charger pairs and both have lots of charge to give. My teammate and I had our armor drained very fast and we were able to suckle at the chargers for most of the time. The map only gives us a revolver, and then later a shotgun and mp5, in addition to the standard loadout. I guess we also get a wrench and some explosives right before the end but I never used the wrench and the explosives were only useful for the very last fight. The revolver is a good weapon, but not for crowd control and the map can get tedious real fast. We either die a lot or run back to spawn to constantly top off our armor, I guess a lot more people might even that out. Players start with full ammo and there is ammo in the map, it's a pretty good deal.

The first enemies we fight are Xen aliens, we have to kill the slaves before they endlessly resurrect each other and then dodge angry bees. But it escalates from there very quickly to guys with guns and they are much deadlier. Later we fight snipers and they kill us in one hit. There are also heavy weapons grunts but they were nothing to us.

The level design overall is pretty good. It has sort of a Counter-Strike vibe in some areas, a feeling not quite the labs of Black Mesa but not quite de_train. There was one room in particular that screamed 'Black Mesa' thought. There were some nice details throughout and the map looked really good overall other than a few things I noticed.

Halfway through the map we saw a bullsquid reskinned to be a giant eye, it was great. But then we went up a vent and hit a checkpoint and died to another eye in the middle of the room. We respawned in the wall and got shoved out cinematically only to be killed by the bullsquid eye. When we respawned it happened even sooner. We got stuck in an infinite death loop due to this checkpoint. I had to cheat to break out of it. We had no weapons either, just crowbars to deal with the instant kill eye in our new spawn. It really ruined the map for us.

There was also a cricket sound effect right at the beginning of the map that was insanely loud, I have no idea where to mention that so it gets its own paragraph.

It was a fun walkthrough map, linear except for one short backtrack. It has some tough combat that would be better with more players and it has plenty of supplies to actually support that approach. The map looks pretty good and there are some nice details and lighting. The checkpoint halfway through is a huge problem and nearly ended the map for us. Huge warning if you are playing this map, after you see the first big eye watch out for the second one at the top of the ladder, dying here will drop you into a cycle of death and rebirth there is no escape from besides cheating.

Pros:

  • tons of supplies, especially HEV
  • map looked pretty good and was easy to navigate
  • combat is tough and the map can actually supply more players to compensate for it
  • I love that giant eye model and I am glad this map has made me aware of it
  • the HEV (and health) charger had a massive pool and kept us supplied for almost the whole map

Cons:

  • the checkpoint strands players in a death loop and for that reason alone I can not recommend playing
  • the one hit kill snipers were not a great idea
  • revolver is an inefficient way to deal with the enemies
Score: 4.5 / 10
