Simply Subpar - Review of Windowlicker

Sorry, we couldn't find any images attached to this page.

The mapper has attempted really hard at trying to create an eerie, atmospheric horror map. As much as I wanted it to work, it just doesn't.

While there is attention to lighting, sounds and even effects like hand-placed fog sprites (and other environmental sprites), general black fog (to reduce visibility range) and others, it just never really immerses you enough.

There was only one 5 minute part that actually had an eerie atmosphere. The rest just was just walking around trying to find the next objective.

While the mapper paid close attention to the smaller, finer details, he didn't nail the general vibe first. Thus, all those finer details amount to nothing as the overall vibe is just never there.

There are parts at the beginning where you find keys but are given no info on what they actually unlock. Their doors don't even show text beforehand, so you just have to wander around the house, trying every door to see which one opened.

While there is sparse combat, it's still there and it's lethal. There aren't any checkpoints (new respawn points) so when you die, you have to start from the very beginning of the map (empty handed). One combat section is also difficult and causes deaths, but it also seals off the area so respawning players can't come back there and are locked off from the rest of the map.

The map ends really abruptly, leading to no explanations or conclusions. You're just playing, thinking what the hell is going on, and then the map ends with not even a single line of text presented as ending.

I just can't give this a good score. It tried new things, that's nice and good to take some inspiration from, but its execution is subpar and doesn't leave a good impression.

Pros:

  • Attention to fine details such as environmental sprites and lighting

Cons:

  • Fails to capture the mood it wants
  • No checkpoints (new respawn points)
  • One combat section seals you in, locking out all respawning players
  • Ending is abrupt and unexplained
Score: 4 / 10
