Map review of Escape From Doom Town
by dunkelschwamm | June 6, 2026 | 3040 characters
Full review disclaimer: I noclipped around because if these jumps are possible for two players to achieve alone then I am simply not good enough at this game's platforming to complete it.
Escape From Doom Town is a platforming scavenger hunt map that takes place, it would seem, in the brutalist album cover version of a soviet residential block. There are apartment buildings, benches and playground equipment, rows of storage shacks, a couple stores. All throughout everything is intentionally foggy, empty, barren, understocked, in disrepair. Every detail has a punchy simplicity that reminds me of some of my favorite Doom wads. There are some radios that can be turned on to supply some additional mood-setting grungy rock loops.
There are three objectives to finish the map and an optional fourth one. One of those objectives is relatively simple if you just wander around enough, but the other two require some expert jumping skills. Normally I'd try to skill my way through a platforming puzzle, but we were finding that we couldn't even get enough vertical leap even with boosting to get through these, so we figured we need more than two players to boost through the whole thing.
The optional fourth objective is a very fun scavenger hunt if you don't mind some of platforming challenges that come with some of them. I managed to clear some of those to find the diary pages, but when we cheated to grab all of them nothing seemed to happen. Completing the first three objectives opens up the ending, but we can't tell that grabbing the diary pages changes anything at all.
Noclipping around for fun, we found a fun easter egg under the map. I don't know if there's a way to find that normally, but it was cute.
I think the thing that catches me the most about this map is its sense of scale. I'm used to Goldsrc not being able to do big, huge, wide-open spaces but this creates a very effective huge area without any issues.
Overall, I can't speak to this map's efficacy as a platforming map, but I loved its aesthetic and brushwork. I can recommend it for that one, even if you find yourself unable to complete the puzzles you aren't missing much end reward and can just votemap out once you've soaked in all the beauty.
Pros:
- Gorgeous brutalist scenery that evokes huge scale
- I love me a good scavenger hunt map
- Hidden easter egg is super cute
- Nice music hidden around the map
Cons:
- I don't know if this is the map's fault, but I genuinely don't know if I was supposed to use more players to boost to complete this map
- Unclear if there are any rewards for completing the optional goal, feels like a let-down
- While a lot of the map feels intentionally empty, a lot of it feels like it builds intrigue toward a hollow dead-end that makes me feel silly for having such faith in the map
