Map review of Escape From Doom Town
by GrandmasterJ | June 6, 2026 | 5371 characters
Doom Town is a dreary place filled with fog, nonsense architecture, and some diary pages. The story is simple, we hate where we are in life and so we must leave and that requires a ray of hope, an achieved dream, and medication.
Players start off in a black room with a big button that starts a vote to start the map. There is a message on the wall and one line says "may teamwork help you out". I think this line is warning us that we need multiple people to complete the map because the gameplay is a majority of very difficult jumps without the aid of climbing. Because it was a jumping map made recently I kept trying to climb everything but I couldn't. It felt like there were a lot of ledges just barely out of my reach that I could have slipped right in with climbing. In the early game my teammate and I kept boosting off of each other's head to make difficult jumps. It's very possible I just suck at platforming, but most of the platforming in this map was incredibly hard and sometimes felt impossible. It makes me wonder if that teamwork line in the starting box meant we need a lot of people and that people towers were the way to do. Ultimately we noclipped around because it was too painful to play the map legitimately.
There is a building in the middle that is a jumping puzzle, blocks barely protrude from the surface and I am pretty sure there are some blocks that require boosting to get through. There is a ladder at the bottom that I boosted to get onto but it was just barely in reach, I kept tapping the jump button for height, grabbing the ladder, then jumping off because I am tapping too fast. It's the first step onto the middle tower and it was really hard and when we fall we fall all the way to the bottom. When we cheated to get to the top we found an incredibly helpful longjump and a opened a shortcut to the previously mentioned ladder. So the shortcut is after the part where we have to boost off each other and try not to accidentally jump off a ladder.
I want to like the map but all the jumping is so frustrating and needing either improbable amounts of teamwork or godlike skills.
Besides the gameplay the map at least looks interesting. I want to say it looks good overall but there are some parts that really bring down the experience, like the room we start in when we arrive in Doom Town. It just looks bad, its a big box with generic carpet texture for the floor and I think that's a carpet texture on the ceiling. The balcony sides are offset with the walls and the walls themselves are massively thick. It looks a lot better when we get into the city and see the foggy brutalist town in all it's glory. The town itself is big and open with only the fog really obscuring the view. Everything is so chunky but I think it goes well with the brutalist aesthetic in this map. The floor texture could use some livening up though, its some ugly gravel for most of the exterior area.
Collecting the three objectives is really hard. Two of them are after the main jumping puzzles which as I've already stated are so hard (or broken/impossible) that we gave up and cheated past them. One is simply in a pharmacy. Once we got all three the exit opens up and when we go through it the map just ends. We also picked up all the diary pages, which does NOT require insane jumping skills, but besides an acknowledgement message nothing really happened.
While we were cheating around we saw a section of the level below the town. We beat the map and then restarted just to see what was down there (we thought the exit would put us down there, but no, it ends the map). Turns out it's a section of the back rooms which was neat and culturally relevant considering the backrooms movie came out last week. I don't know how to get there and I don't know how to escape.
The map looked great but left a lot to be desired gameplay wise. We picked up all the diary pages no problem but that didn't really help us do anything. It was fun exploring things but since the textures are brutalist concrete with gravel we felt we had already seen everything while actually missing a quarter of the map. The real main focus of this map are the two big jumping areas that lead to two out of three of the objectives. These areas are so incredibly hard that I feel they might be impossible unless you can coordinate other players to form towers. The disappointment on top of this map is that the weird building in the screenshots, the Panorama Hotel in real world Slovakia, can not be entered and instead there is a dark one room side building with a stupid diary page that does nothing.
Pros:
- The map evokes a doomer vibe for sure
- the exterior parts of the map look really geed when taken in all at once
- the map spelled out the objectives very clearly, the objectives themselves glowed bright
- cool backrooms section we can't get to
Cons:
- the jumping requires either improbable teamwork, godlike skills, or is just broken, I don't know which
- the longjump is so important to this map and it's past a really hard jumping puzzle
- the shortcut for the middle jumping puzzle really sucks
- the map looks bad in places
