Map review of Quiet Neighborhood
by dunkelschwamm | June 20, 2026 | 2766 characters
Quiet Neighborhood opens as a quiet exploration of a communal block but quickly becomes a zombie adventure map wherein players must hunt for keys among respawning zombies while only being able to carry one weapon at a time. There are a couple explorable apartment buildings, a not-overwhelmingly sized outdoor area, a few interesting ways that it opens up into interesting structures.
I think the simple geometry is effective at building a very moody nighttime city feel. The atmosphere is fully appreciated in the scavenger hunt nature of the map, as every detail feels important to look over. This map is good at conveying what is and isn't a dead end for the most part, though an easteregg G-man caught my attention and, after somehow knocking its health halfway down, became incorrectly convinced that I might be able to slay him until the end of the map. Later into the map we enter a mazey underground tunnel, find an abandoned structure, and enter an underground lab. All of these have excellent atmosphere. The lab in particular delivers a pretty funny gag really well. Also, like Hedgy's Escape From Doom Town that we reviewed recently, there are little stereos that will play banger music if activated scattered about.
Much of the map is spent navigating the zombies. They work the way respawning zombies ought to: they add a sense of urgency to the scavengery hunt. They use these great melty fleshy zombie models that are a ton of fun. The zombies often get annoying, but I think that's kind of the point. Once you unlock the shotgun the zombie problem becomes far more manageable.
Overall, I think this is a fun and simple map and easy to recommend for a medium-short length zombie experience. It doesn't overstay its welcome, has just enough explorable area to be interesting (no more, no less), and the map's challenge is effective.
Pros:
- Atmosphere is simple and effective
- Great music
- Apartment interiors are extremely well brushed
- The scavenger-hunt zombie-annoying is a good, effective combo
- I love that it let us play after the objective was complete to explore more
- Solo possible, co-op enhanced
Cons:
- The custom zombie models have fucky hitboxes that feel bad to shoot
- Requiring the player to choose individual weapons is an interesting gimmick, but not one I found fun
- I feel like there could have been more to the lab area than a couple rooms with lingering zombies
- The invisible walls cause seemingly possible jumps to become death sentences.
- The underground maze was a maze that requires repeat traversal: slog
