Map review of Quiet Neighborhood

From the name of the map I thought it would be a relaxed and chill time. But it's really more like a zombie infested Postal, we have to pick up beer in a hostile town. At first the streets are empty but once we pick up weapons we get swamped by zombies. Once we get the beer the zombies stop being a problem and then we party.
We start off in a square hedge room with a button that votes to start the map. Once we start the map we are in an apartment so small it was a bit hard to move around with my one teammate in the same space. If we had more players I can imagine the tight quarters being very annoying. But the halls seemed just big enough for us two to move through without too much trouble. We have no weapons, not even the medkit, and only 75 health. It's a little alarming until we explore and realize there are no enemies.
The interior of the apartment building didn't impress, flat texturing on tiny rooms in an apartment with a weird room layout. When we leave the apartment we see a spiral staircase with no rails, we can fall straight down to the lower level by going to the right. Lots of locked doors to the other apartments and the only indication that some of these doors can be opened are the locked door sounds and the welcome mats that stick out like a sore thumb against the brutalist concrete floor. The map looks better when we get outside and the brutalist slavic architecture, it's still rough but it looks like it works towards a purpose. Later in the map we get into some sheds and see stuff pickled in jars, these are the best custom textures in the map, grade A jars here.
Stuff happens once we get a wrench, things get better when we find a revolver but surprise! We can only use one weapon at a time. The map could probably be beaten solo but having a teammate was great, I stuck with the wrench and my teammate had the gun. It really feels balanced towards two players.
There are a couple of things to do in the map; find bags of potato chips to collect, find keys (that usually lead to another key), and ultimately find the beer. It's one big scavenger hunt with infinitely respawning zombies to keep things from getting boring. There were times we found keys and we had no clue what they opened but having realized that real locked doors have locked doors sounds when used we didn't have too many problems. This map could be a real problem to players not paying attention to the map cues and even then my teammate and I spent a lot of time trying to find the next thing. There are also radios that play music, they aren't important to any of the objectives but they are very fun.
Collecting all the bags of chips unlocks a bunch of weapons, we actually did this after getting the beer. Once we get the beer there is a map vote to end the map so it was nice being able to play past the ending and find all the chips. But at that point the reward was unhelpful. There is an invincible G-man on the roof of one of the buildings, the weapons unlocked did help us try to unsuccessfully kill him. After we learned that we couldn't kill him I tried to end the map by using the beer in the apartment to no effect. We voted to keep playing the map past the ending and now we can't end the map.
There is a street with a big hole in it exposing a pipe, it has some scattered barricades to block the path and excuse the big invisible wall blocking the way. It's not a well done invisible wall and it frustrated us, especially since we saw a light in a window of a building on the other side. At one point players can jump from roof to roof, except there are invisible walls and players can only jump between two buildings and the other, equally close, buildings have invisible walls blocking us.
The map is fun and reminds me a bit of Postal and Shaun of the Dead. It's not the best looking at times and has some bullshit invisible walls and doesn't mark objectives enough but all of that can be overcome. When we do overcome obstacles it feels really good and that feeling carries us towards beer, then we party.
Pros:
- The map rewards players as it goes on, giving players a growing sense of accomplishment
- lots of fun stuff to find, weapons, keys, chips, radios, pickled jars
- the main city area really came together well
- I like the choice to continue past the end of the map
- the radio songs are a treat
- getting the beer is a very satisfying ending
Cons:
- I'm not a fan of how this map used invisible walls
- some parts, mostly interiors, looked and felt bad
- some objectives were not obvious
- if you chose to play past the end of the map, you can't end the map without server commands
