Map review of Mako
by GrandmasterJ | August 15, 2026 | 2827 characters
Mako is a fun little map where players fight human grunts and aliens, both xen and race x, through a city until we get to a grocery store and end the level in the sewers. The map description says we're taking advantage of some chaos to steal from a corporation, so I guess the corporation was the grocery store?
So we start off in a city street fighting some aliens and we encounter a laser wall. We try a bunch of doors that are around and none of them open, so we walk through the laser wall and take a tone of damage and turn off the lasers from the other side. Was that how that was supposed to go down? It feels like I skipped something.
So we continue along and there is a door ahead, a window to our left, and more street to the right. My teammate goes through the window, I go through the door, and we go fight through some hallways until we link up again. There are some alternate paths through a mostly linear map which presents some interesting interactions, a lot of meeting my teammate unexpectedly.
The enemies respawn, so everytime we die we have to sprint through combat to get to where we were. The enemies fight each other so its not too bad, but still annoying.
Eventually we get to the grocery store and we have to fight a gargantua inside. If you were to sprint deeper into the store there is an rpg on top of some coolers. After beating the boss a hole opens up in the floor that I accidentally fell into and landed on top of a conveyor belt sewer system that carried me to the map end.
The map is somewhat confusing. I don't know if there was a better way to disable the laser grid besides just tanking the damage. Plus there were buttons I pressed and I never found out what they did. The branching paths are fun but also add to the confusion, maybe the buttons I pressed allowed my teammate to progress, maybe the opposite is true. Either way we eventually ended up in the same area where we fought a confusing boss fight. During the boss fight my teammate died and had so much trouble going through the whole level of respawning enemies. I ended the map alone.
Pros:
- Never a dull moment. It seemed like something new and interesting was around every corner
- lots of ammo and supplies scattered around the map
- while the layout wasn't straightforward, all paths did end up leading to where I needed to go
Cons:
- Lots of respawning enemies that were a real drag in the late game
- with so many branching paths it was hard to stick together and have a sense of progression
- I don't know what was going on in this map and the story in the map description did not help
